Our Mission

Café X: By Any Beans Necessary is a Black, mother-daughter owned, cooperative coffee shop built to support generational wealth building in the Black community and other marginalized communities. The concept of the cooperative originated out of the RISE San Diego community fellowship program completed by Co-owner and Founder, Khea Pollard, in 2016. Utilizing her background in public service and her passion for systems change work, she established the vision to tackle systemic issues vulnerable communities in our region face each and every day.

We fulfill our mission by developing cross-sector partnerships with community-based organizations and individuals; sustaining creative and artistic projects; and developing the next generation of leaders to generate a social, cultural, and economic movement that changes the quality of life in our communities - one cup at a time.

We are designed as a cooperative to equalize voting power between member-owners and model an equitable, collaborative environment  where team members are respected/respectful, feel free and self-expressed. We seek to balance operational excellence with artistic expression for the social, cultural, and economic betterment of our communities.
